First Practice Fall 2010

Hello everybody,

The year’s first Aikido practice is fast approaching. The first practice will be on Saturday, September 18th, from 1:45pm-4pm in Riverside Lounge (the practice rooms behind New South). Our schedule for the rest of the year follows:

Riverside Lounge
Mon: 7:30-9:00p.m.

Wed: 8:30-10:00p.m.
Sat: 1:45-4:00p.m.

You don’t need to wear a gi to the first few classes if you don’t have one. Sweat pants and a t-shirt will do fine. No prior experience is necessary.

Congratulations to Luella and Greg who successfully tested at Shobukan’s December kyu testing for yonkyu and ikkyu respectively! Both of you looked great!

Also, thank you to everyone who came out to support them and to train with Saotome-Sensei during the morning class at the Dojo last Saturday. We had a great Georgetown Aikikai showing on the mat.

Ong Bak 2: The Beginning (movie night)

The Aikido club is hosting a movie night soon, open to the entire campus community. We’ll be watching a Thai martial arts film.

What: Ong Bak 2: The Beginning + Asian cuisine!
Date: Friday, Oct. 9
Time: 7:15-9:15p.m.
Location: ICC 115

Ong Bak 2: The Beginning (องค์บาก 2) is a 2008 Thai martial arts film co-directed by and starring Tony Jaa. It is a follow-up to Jaa’s 2003 breakout film Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior. Initially claimed to be a sequel to Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior, Ong Bak 2 was then announced to be a prequel to its predecessor. Unlike its predecessor however, which had a contemporary and realistic setting, Ong Bak 2 is actually set in ancient Thailand and as such, could be described as a historical epic with elements of fantasy combined.

First Practice Fall 2009

We do not have an official schedule for the semester yet (see Update below), but our first practice will be this Wednesday, September 9, from 7:30 to 9:00p.m. in Riverside Lounge (that’s the side of New South that faces the river). If you can’t make it to our first class, you are welcome to join us at any of our future classes. This is our tentative schedule starting Wednesday (we’ll keep you updated on future practice dates):

Mon/Wed: 7:30-9:00p.m
Sat: 2-4p.m

You don’t need to wear a gi (uniform) to the first few classes if you don’t have one. Sweat pants and a t-shirt will do fine. Also, there are no dues for the first class you come to (be it this or a later one), so please come and check it out! No prior experience necessary.

Update (9/18): Our official Fall schedule is in, and the above dates and space have been confirmed.

Congrats to Maria who successfully tested for her shodan rank on Saturday 21 June! This brings Georgetown Aikikai’s yudansha (blackbelt) count up to three students… our highest ever. More photos will be coming shortly.

2009 Summer Camp

Aikido Shobukan Dojo’s’ annual weapons intensive summer camp will be held from 1-5 July at Catholic University. (Wednesday 1 and Sunday 5 July are half days). Unfortunately we are not allowed to ask for SAC funding during univeristy vacations, so please see Mike at Shobukan if you’re interested in working camp. If you’d like to attend and need to borrow club weapons (bokken and jo) for the seminar, please see Luella for access to the storage containers.

As usual, we will not be holding class during the summer, so if you’d like to continue training during the break, please visit Shobukan dojo, which offers classes every day of the week. We will resume training on campus in September.

It’s that time of the year again. Hope everyone had a great summer… and are ready to start another year of Aikido at Georgetown! As of now our tentative schedule is Wednesday 7:30-9pm and Saturday 2-4pm in New South’s Riverside Lounge (or next door in New South’s “Deep South” space). Both rooms are adjacent to the dance studios. Hope to see you at practice!
